3 Reasons to Replace your Undercarriage Parts
3 Reasons to Replace your Undercarriage Parts
How often do you carry out maintenance checks on your undercarriage? Undercarriage maintenance and replacements are essential to the health and performance of your machine. Here are three reasons to stop putting off replacing your undercarriage parts (you’ll thank us later!).
1. Undercarriage part replacement extends the track life of your machine.
When sprockets become worn down, they can cause wear on your undercarriage tracks. This goes to show how seemingly small issues with small undercarriage parts can lead to larger issues with much larger parts. A small, easily fixable wear and tear issue can result in costly repairs and even pose a danger to operators, particularly when working on uneven or rough terrain.
2. Reduce downtime with undercarriage maintenance
Checking and replacing undercarriage parts on a regular basis makes maintenance simpler and reduces the risk of unexpected failure. This avoids the risk of long periods of downtime as your team diagnoses the issues with your undercarriage, sources replacement parts and perhaps has to call in an engineer.
3. There are many causes of undercarriage damage
Improper track tension, build-up of dirt and debris and even the improper operation of your machine can cause undercarriage damage. This makes it all the more important to inspect and replace your undercarriage parts on a regular basis when there are so many factors that can contribute to its deterioration.
We go into more detail on the top causes of undercarriage damage in another article, but essentially, improper track tension can wear out rollers and cause track tearing, debris built up can lead to rubber tracks stretching, and sharp turns can even lead to the de-tracking of rubber tracks.
How to inspect your undercarriage parts
Inspecting your undercarriage parts should be a regular part of your maintenance routine for the reasons listed above.
Here are some tips on inspecting your undercarriage for signs of damage:
- Look for holes, cracks or obvious signs of wear on track links, shoes, track rollers, carrier rollers, idlers, segments and track adjusters
- Check for tight or loose undercarriage track tension (use your machine’s maintenance manual if you’re unsure of the right track tension for your machine)
- Inspect the undercarriage for oil leaks and ensure grease points are well lubricated
