The benefits of rebuilding your engine
Rebuilding the engine of your plant and machinery might sound like a very time-consuming process, but the benefits can oftentimes far outweigh the labour and costs involved.
This article will cover some of the signs to look out for that might indicate that your engine needs attention and the benefits associated with rebuilding instead of replacing your engine.
How to know when your diesel engine needs rebuilding?
As is the case with any part of a machine, faulty performance at one time or another is inevitable. Diesel engines differ to traditional petrol engine as they rely on compressed air to ignite the fuel source as opposed to spark plugs; as a result, there are different signs of malfunction to look out for, such as:
- High blowby} this occurs when a mixture of compressed air and combustion gases leak between the engine’s pistons and cylinder wall and enter the crankcase- this is often caused by wear and tear of the piston ring
- Rough idling} this refers to when your engine might be revving up and down in an attempt to balance fuel and compression or hesitate when it comes to idling which can be indicative of a malfunctioning injector or valve
- Increasing fuel consumption} a consistent increase in fuel consumption is a sign of poor engine functionality and could be due to a number of things from issues with the camshaft to contaminated fuel
- High coolant or oil consumption} an increase in coolant/oil consumption can indicate an oil leak, damaged cylinder head/gasket or o-rings.
What are the benefits of an engine overhaul?
Lower cost
There is a significant amount of money to be saved from carrying out an engine overhaul compared to buying a new engine. However, it is important to ensure that you have the right tools at hand and professionals with plenty of experience in order to avoid needing to spend money on extra repairs and modifications in the future.
OEM Quality Assurance
Remanufactured engine parts are often tested against higher-then-original specs, which means that rebuilt engines are likely to be more reliable and function even better than a new engine would. When it comes to diesel engines, there are a lot of upgrades over the years and a remanufactured engine would include all of these parts.
Sustainability
Rebuilding your diesel engine is a much more environmentally-friendly practice compared to replacing your engine which will involve the manufacturing of new parts and use of raw materials. Older engines also tend to emit more pollutants, so rebuilding your diesel engine can helps reduce this whilst preventing materials from ending up in landfills.
Faster service and higher productivity
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the supply chain for parts has faced significant struggle which has meant that plant and machinery owners are often having to wait long times for engine parts. Remanufactured parts avoid this delay and mean that machines can get back to work sooner.
