The Energy Transition - Electrifying Mining
The focus on decarbonisation remains at the forefront of the mining industry, which is what has been driving the transition from diesel-powered equipment to battery-powered machinery.
The electrification of the mining is not without its challenges, such as the need for adequate charging infrastructure and fulfilling energy storage capacity requirements. In addition to this, mining operations often take place in hostile environments, which means subjecting equipment to extreme temperatures and conditions which can cause issues for battery performance.
However, despite these challenges which are being dealt with as the mining facilities around the world continue on their pursuit of electrification, there are several advantages which should not be disregarded.
Benefits of electrifying mining
Improved working conditions
Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is classified as a class one carcinogen by the majority of global health advisory bodies. By replacing diesel engines with electric battery-powered ones, the issue of hazardous air quality is eliminated and there is minimised risk to the health of miners.
Less noise pollution
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) produce much less noise compared to their diesel counterparts, this increases situational awareness amongst miners and enhances communication. This means workers can better detect warning signals and hazards such as falling rocks.
Long-term cost efficiency
While the upfront cost of BEVs may be high compared to diesel vehicles, electric vehicles have lower energy costs per mile which results in significant savings over their lifespan. Furthermore, BEVs also require less maintenance compared to diesel equipment which adds to its cost efficiency.
Reducing carbon footprint
BEVs produce zero tailpipe emissions which aligns with the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly the amount of CO2 emissions to which the mining industry contributes significantly.
Better ventilation
The removal of emissions means the need for underground ventilation is reduced, which means that money that would be put towards installing and maintaining ventilation can now be put towards investing in more BEV and battery-powered equipment to help keep the cycle of environmentally-friendly mining grow.
