The earliest earthmoving machines were based on agricultural tractors and utilised direct drive manual gearboxes. Following developments in the USA automotive industry in the 1940/50's construction equipment manufacturers used power trains based around torque convertors, planetary gear groups and power shift transmissions. 

One of the first Caterpillar tractors to go into production with a power shift transmission was the legendary D8H tractor in 1959. Marketed as 'split second shifts' the transmission reduced cycle time between forward & reverse. Production and operator efficiency were significantly improved due to the ease of use and comfort of then design.
