Continuous tracks can be traced back to the 1830's, although the first 'endless railway wheel' was patented by the British Engineer James Boydell in 1846.
Predominantly developed and used for military applications 'continuous tracks' were introduced onto Holt Tractors in the early 1900's. When soldiers observed these tractors 'crawling' they were soon nicknamed 'Caterpillar Tracks' .
Cat also developed the 'high drive' (elevated sprocket) design, this is when the drive is elevated away from the earth, reducing damage and providing design and maintenance advantages. Caterpillar first intoduced this with the D10 dozer in 1977.
